Inspiration : Get the World Moving

P o s t . b y    l    M i m i

Today, I wanted to share something that I committed myself to doing for the next 16 weeks. Through a program called Global Corporate Challenge (GCC), I pledged to walk an average of 10,000 steps a day for 16 weeks.

This program is hosted by Get the World Moving. What they do is provide companies and their employees with accelerometers to calculate each step that is taken. With these steps and 6 other teammates steps, it calculates the distance traveled and by the end of 16 weeks each team would have traveled around the world if the team averaged 10,000 steps.  This year, everyone started off digitally travelling in Rio De Janeiro, Brasil. Not only do they provide facts about each destination stumbled upon, but they also share some fun and interesting local knowledge to enhance our digital traveling experience.

I am currently in love with this program. It motivates me to take less detours and walk to others people's offices to have face to face talks. It has gotten me moving from an average of  3,000 steps per day to more than 8,000 steps per day (Goal is to average 10,000 by the end of the 16 Wks). Plus, not only is it benefiting me but every  corporate employee who registered for this program helps allow 1 youth member of the society to also get accelerometer and also most of the registration fee goes to providing transportation for those in need of it.
Care to join me for a walk?
Now, I understand that not all of us have access to pedometers or accelerometers, therefore I've compiled a list of free apps and activities that anyone can have access to.

Applications:

  • Samsung : S Health - Walk Mate. Helps you keep tracking of the steps you take. This app also helps keep tracks of calories that you should burn in order to reach a specific goal. I find this very useful!
  • Map My Run : Apps and also you can access the website as long as you have internet.
  • Nike + Running : For those who have Nike + activated shoes.
  • Free Pedometers on Android and Apple Apps : Runtastic Pedometer and Pedometer Step Counter.

Activities:

  • Go for a walk or a hike: Find a trail with a beautiful destination. This way you can set a goal and receive the reward of a beautiful scenery at the end. Everything is more meaningful with a purpose.
  • Play a sport: I'm not much of a runner but I love learning to play different sports. Even if its Table Tennis/Ping Pong, get yourself up and moving!
  • Other fun activities: Dancing like Zumba for a prolong amount, swimming, riding your bike, skating, etc.
Any activity can better your fitness, just as long as you are not staying in one place for a long time. I always see commercials on TV about how kids should play outside more, it doesn't only pertain to kids, everyone needs to. So, let's get up and get moving, one step at a time.
